In our opening presentation, we will discuss the history of health care reform in the United States and the future landscape of health care. Pharmacists can play a pivotal role in creating better patient care and this current environment of health care reform is the perfect opportunity to place pharmacists in the best position to influence patient care in positive ways. B R E A K O U T S E S S I O N : What is Managed Care? Dr. Johnathan Yeh, Director of Clinical Program Health Plan San Joaquin Learn the core concepts of Managed Care and how pharmacists can play an integral role throughout the system. The presentation will show students how they can apply their clinical, administrative and pharmacoeconomic knowledge to create better outcomes for the population. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the notion of Managed Care and what it has to offer you. Specialty Pharmacy Dr. Nicole Kloeppel, Specialty Pharmacist OptumRx Specialty pharmacy is a growing industry for pharmacists to be active in. Come to this presentation to learn about pharmacists’ role in specialty pharmacy. What is an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and the Role of Pharmacists in an ACO? Nancy England, ACO Program Manager, Senior Pharmacist The Affordable Care Act provided the framework for Accountable Care Organizations, but not many students know what they are. In this presentation, we will discuss what an ACO is, how they are set up to improve patient care and how a pharmacist can play a role in an accountable care organization Lunch Covered California--CE Credit Provided Gabrielle Fonseca, CSHP Grants Manager In this presentation, we will discuss what Covered California is, so that we as pharmacists can better explain it to our patients. We will discuss how to navigate the marketplace, including the different tiers and what is provided. We will also discuss resources that you can utilize to help your patients get covered. Many common questions about Covered California will also be touched on, such as penalties and when patients can switch their coverage. Collaboration across Health Care Practitioners Dr. Julianna Burton, Assistant Chief, Ambulatory Clinical Services PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program Director, UC Davis Health System Dr. Chris Chan, Sr. Director of Pharmaceutical Services Inland Empire Health Plan In this panel, pharmacists from different areas in practice, managed care, health system, and outpatient will discuss their collaboration with a practitioner. We will also discuss the potential for further collaboration across pharmacists’ fields. We will explore the impact that further collaboration can potentially have on patient care. B R E A K O U T S E S S I O N : Formulary Management Dr. Robert M. Mower, Coordinator of Managed Care Pharmacy Services, UC Davis Health System P&T Committee Member for Western Advantage Health Plan Exploration through formulary management in both an outpatient and inpatient perspective. We will discuss the considerations in both cases and discuss the process for placing a medication on the formulary, including the role of the P&T committee. Implementation of SB493, what is next? Jon. R. Roth CEO California Pharmacists Association Now that pharmacists have provider status in California, what is next? We will discuss the provisions in the law and how our pharmacy organizations are working with payer organizations to create a place for pharmacists in collaborative practice. Career Planning: Managed Care Residencies Dr. Barrett Smith, Resident at Kaiser Permanente--Sacramento Dr. Hana Camarillo, Resident at Kaiser Permanente--Sacramento Dr. Ming Shen, Resident at Health Plan of San Joaquin Dr. Rodney Gedey, Residency Coordinator at Health Net Dr. Noreen Chan, Clinical Pharmacist at Blue Shield of California Dr. Elizabeth Sampsel, Director of Pharmacy at San Francisco Health Plan Managed Care Residency Directors and recent residents will be available to answer any burning questions about a residency in Managed Care. They will discuss what a resident does during their residency and how a student can best utilize their time for a good experience.
